Console Tables - One is Actually a Great, Practical Storage Option

Your bathroom, there is never enough room to put towels and other things and what's worse, is that you have this empty wall in there that would be this perfect spot to put something where you could store stuff. Well, if you want to be different, don't go with some conventional shelving unit, instead, be adventurous and turn to console tables to solve your storage space woes.

Desk Shelf Unit

Really, console tables are a great practical place to store things because their designs have evolved from just having a surface where you can set things down. Nowadays, you can get ones that have a slew of different storage features starting with ones that have shelves. On these shelves you could put towels, other toiletry items, and even decorative things if you wanted. In addition to shelves, there are also other options with cabinets and drawers.

Desk Shelf Unit

So, because of how you can easily store things in them, one would be a great choice for putting in your bathroom. Plus, you could put console tables in a number of other rooms throughout your home as well. Like, at the end of a hallway if you wanted, in an entryway, in your bedroom, and you could even put one in a dining room as a great place to store and also display your precious china.

Now, not only are console tables a great buy for their practicality, but they are also perfect for dressing up the look of any room as well. This is made possible due to the fact that they are crafted all sorts of gorgeous materials while being styled in a number of different ways through the use of both finishes and accenting. For example, you can get one that is crafted from pine that has a very simple design with no frills while featuring a rich black finish. Or, you could also get one built from pine, but this time around is it has flared legs and a ridged apron while being finished in a two toned black and red finish adorned with hand painted bird accents. And, you can even get one constructed from maple with country styling finished in a distressed white finish.

There are many other material and finishing options available when making console tables in addition to the ones that were just mentioned. For instance, there are ones made from a combination of metal and glass, featuring a base crafted from wrought finished in a patina copper color while supporting a glass table top.

To check out all the console tables that you could possibly purchase for your space, just hit the Internet and do some online shopping. By simply browsing through some online stores you can browse everything that is available and when you do find something, it will generally be at the best prices possible.

Gift Ideas for People Who Work With Computers

It is difficult to stay organized if you sit and work at a computer all day. Most people's desks are disorganized, which makes it hard to work efficiently. Although it takes only a few minutes to clean a desk, it is not easy when a heavy workload is on you. Organizers make it easy to clean up, even if you work or frequent the computer at home. Revolving desk organizers make anyone who works at a computer happy. The organizer helps tidy the desk and provide storage for clips, pencils, pens, cards, markers, scissors and other useful things. The great thing is that the organizer rotates, bringing you to the station of interest.

Desk Shelf Unit

Clip-on keyboard trays are handy tools. The trays slide underneath the desk, holding the keyboard in place. The trays have wrist rests and clamp down to hold the tray steady. Some people keep paper towels at their desk. Cow paper holders are useful. The cow will add that down-home rural feeling to the desk while you work. When you need a paper towel, just roll down the paper, and there it is!

Desk Shelf Unit

Paper shredders are excellent gifts today. Three-in-one shredders are even better because they ensure more confidentiality. The shredder destroys CDs, credit cards or other risky information, shredding it into an unusable pile. Everyone could benefit from this device to stop identity theft.

Computer workers and home computer users often keep discs close by, and often the discs get scratched. Giving the gift of repair is helpful, and an easy-to-use marker eliminates skipping, repeating, scratches and so on. No one wants to throw away an expensive disc that it could be repaired. Printer stands are great space-saving tools. They are made of solid woods and let anyone place the printer on top while making room for smaller items. The shelves underneath let them store paper, discs, stapler, staples, mail and so on.

PC tower stands have wheels that will let a person move the tower easily. It is bad to put a CPU unit on the floor, carpet or such areas, because dust gets inside the computer and eventually ruins the motherboard, CPU and other parts. The stand not only eases the moving of a PC, it also protects the computer from particles.

People who work long hours on the computer might love items that do not produce a working atmosphere. Mist floor lamps give fresh air like the person was outdoors and soothes the spirits and moisten the skin. The lamp changes colors to bring a twist of whimsy. At the same time, it emits fragrance that you provide to the lamp. It's a perfect gift to lift the spirits. Working at a computer without a break can make anyone feel a little crazy. Lap trays that come with lights are handy for the home or the office. The tray lets the user have more workspace without having a computer in they way. The tray has a light so a person can see while writing, reading and so on.

A radio makes all the difference in the world while working. Some workstations allow music, and a nice radio can soothe an overworked mind. There are many gift ideas, but knowing how which gift to choose is often difficult. When buying a gift, always try to choose an affordable one that will bring the person long-term relief, happiness, etc., as they use their gift.

Buy Solid Wood - There is Too Much Laminated Particleboard in Furniture Today

Nowadays, wooden furniture isn't what it used to be. Solid wood is now considered somewhat of a luxury item, and the market is now flooded with laminated wood, or wood-pattered paper over chipboard furniture, to give it that "wood look." Some of it is better than others, but for the most part, it isn't as sturdy as solid wood, nor is it as pretty.

Desk Shelf Unit

A few years ago, I ordered a very large desk and hutch combination from a nationwide chain of stores that sells office furniture. It looked good on the internet and in person, so I bought it. Little did I know, and the salesman neglected to mention, that for 00 I'd get a bunch of heavy boxes of mostly laminated chipboard, with two solid wood parts, the desk top and the hutch top. The rest was all "wood look." Never having dealt with this before, I was more concerned about putting a very large desk together than in the materials. I had to hire a friend to do it, because the store wanted an additional 0 if I wanted them to come put it together for me.

Desk Shelf Unit

For three days, my friend Kevin glued, drilled and pounded nails to make my desk. In the end, the unit looked great and I was very happy. As time went on, though, it was evident that any nick or bump could mar the chipboard laminate sides and shelves. Moving was a nightmare, because everything got dinged up by the movers, just in everyday handling. Where do you go out and buy matching strips of "wood look" paper to cover damaged areas, without it looking cheap and tacky? I'm not good with this sort of thing, so the whole desk is now in storage until I figure it all out. In the meantime, I went and bought a solid mahogany desk for more money, which was worth every penny I paid. The lesson to me is, to buy real wood in the first place, or go without. This way, hard-earned money isn't wasted on something that is less durable and hard to fix.

A friend gave me a bookshelf unit when I moved to Florida, she no longer wanted it since she was moving up north. It looked new, but then I soon realized that it too, had issues of it's own. It was formica over particleboard, and couldn't handle the weight of my books. It began to bow in the middle, so I gave it to someone else. Again, I bought a large hardwood bookcase and it can hold all my books and then some.

To sum it all up, it is best to save up and buy real wood whenever possible. This way, maybe the whole chipboard laminate or "wood look" paper-covered phase of furniture making will fall by the wayside due to lack of public interest. Look at the lovely Victorian furniture, and hand-carved furniture of other countries. I usually buy American products but not if they aren't made well enough. My current desk was imported from India, and is solid mahogany with dovetailed joints and hand-carved accents. It is well-made and strong. With shipping, I paid 00 for it, and it was worth every penny. Choose quality items and they will last a long time. Don't fall for the lure of furniture that isn't well-made but looks attractive. Shop around and compare to be on the safe side. You will be glad that you did.

Beginning Sewing - Setting Up Your Sewing Area

What you really need is a work surface where you can use your sewing machine. You can make do with a kitchen table or office desk if you must. You will probably become tired or sore more quickly at a workstation of this type because it is really too high. A better choice is a sewing machine cabinet. There are cabinets where your sewing machine actually attaches to the inside of the cabinet or cabinets where your machine sits in a lowered area of the top surface and can be lifted out. Either type of table only requires a small amount of floor space and some of the built-in types allow the machine to drop down when not in use then half of the table top folds over, turning the unit into a small multi-purpose table.

Desk Shelf Unit

Most sewing cabinets also have some sort of storage. Some have cabinet doors that swing open to allow knee room when you are sitting at them and, mounted inside the doors, there are spindles for storing thread spools. Some cabinets have drawers for your sewing tools and accessories. You will undoubtedly need more storage space than your sewing cabinet provides so you might want to consider some other storage as well.

Desk Shelf Unit

Sets of plastic drawers on casters normally sold for craft storage, scrapbooking storage, etc. are a good alternative because you can easily roll them wherever you need them. Other options are stackable plastic boxes. They can even be hidden away in a closet. The storage boxes that fit under your bed can be used too. Better yet, sew a storage device! You can find creative projects for storage in all kinds of places. Just keep your eyes open.

12-14" long magnetic bars for holding tools can be mounted to a wall. They can be found for about a pair at the hardware store. The magnets are strong and easily hold sheers, scissors, seam rippers, and even whole packages of needles.

Fabric storage and pattern storage are the two biggest issues. For fabric, if you don't have a dedicated sewing room, some choices are those under-the-bed boxes with lids to keep the dust out. Another option is to fold each piece of fabric over a wire clothes hanger and hang in it a closet.

There are cardboard boxes you can buy that are just the right size for patterns but if you don't fold the pattern just right to get it back in the original package, they won't fit anymore. Standard file folder storage boxes from any office supply store work better. Two patterns will fit side by side along the longer (legal size) side and if you have one that won't go back in the package, stick it in a clear ziplock freezer bag to keep all the pieces together and it will still fit in the file folder box.

A great way to store current projects you are working on, whether it's a pattern being altered or cut pieces you haven't sewn together yet, is to fold them over a wire clothes hanger and clip a regular clothes-pin or two on to hold everything. Then put the hanger in a closet. When you are ready to work again, simply pull the hanger out and everything is there together and flat and ready to go. If you have several projects on the go at once, make sure the pattern name or number is facing out when you hang it. Then you can easily look through the hangers to find the one you want. You can even attach the original pattern envelope to the hanger with a clothespin for easy identification.

For cutting out patterns, most people use their kitchen table, a craft table, the floor, or even their bed. Any large flat surface will do. Again, if the surface is too high or too low for you, you will find you get tired or sore quickly. An ideal surface is a table with a hard, smooth surface that is 30-36" high (if you stand to cut). If you like to sit down to cut, a 26-30" high table is better. The table should ideally be about 4 -6 feet long and a width you can comfortably reach across. If you prefer to cut from a sitting position, make your table narrow enough that you can reach across it from your chair.

If you can afford it, the largest size cutting mat available for use with a rotary cutter makes a great table top. I actually use my table more for pattern adjusting and pressing than I do for cutting. A layer of ¼" thick cork is glued (with contact cement) to the arborite top of the table, allowing me to pin straight down into it. The cork seems to be heat resistant too. I plan to glue another layer of cork to the existing one to give the pins a little more to stick into. I tape a layer of plain white paper over the cork and use a marking pen to mark a grid or part of a grid on the paper. I need these lines to keep everything square when altering patterns. When needed, I replace the paper.

If I want a large surface for use with the rotary cutter, I use two cutting mats taped together on the bottom side with duct tape. I have to snip a thread or two the blade misses where the joint in the cutting board is but that's not a big deal. These smaller mats fold up for easy storage and I'm back to my cork table again.

Next you need to think about a pressing area. As you sew, it is necessary to press seams. An iron and ironing board will do the job but, in a pinch, you can layer several towels on an arborite table or counter and use that. (The iron's heat may damage some surfaces.) You can even buy special heat-resistant material to cover your surface with, making it more suitable for ironing on. The cork table works well to press on too.

An ironing board isn't ideal for pressing while sewing. It really isn't wide enough or sturdy enough. When you are adhering interfacing, for example, you need to put quite a lot of pressure on the iron. Your ironing board may crumble under that pressure but a counter-top or a table can take the pressure as long as it can also take the heat and steam.

The chair you sit in while sewing is very important. A comfortable one that swivels and rolls is a very good choice. Bear in mind that your feet must reach the floor to work the sewing machine pedal. Good back support will enable you to sew in comfort for longer periods of time.

Flooring in your sewing area is a bit controversial. I prefer linoleum so when pins drop they are easy to pick up (use a magnetic pin holder for quick retrieval) and for smooth and easy rolling of the chair but some people prefer carpet because it's softer to stand on.

A smooth floor has the disadvantage of allowing the foot pedal to scoot around. This can be solved by putting a small rectangle of rubber shelf liner under the pedal. The same material under a serger will keep it from vibrating around on its table too.

One of the most important reasons I have a dedicated sewing room with a door is to keep my cats out. Not only don't I want their hair on every project I make but if they play with spools of thread and get it caught on their rough tongues, they will swallow a bunch of it that will hurt them internally. Cats and thread don't mix!

My sewing room also has a TV and a DVD/VCR so I can watch sewing programs or whatever as I sew. If you're not a TV addict like me, perhaps you would enjoy some music or a relaxing mix of nature sounds while you sew.

A window is nice if you can manage that. With or without a window, excellent lighting is extremely important (especially as your eyes get older). Set up whatever lamps you need so your eyes are not straining. Try to find natural daylight simulation bulbs so colors will appear accurate. You don't want to put a dark navy zipper in a black pair of pants by accident!

For convenience, I also keep a portable phone handy while I'm sewing. It never fails, the phone always rings when my hands are full. Also keep a bottle of water nearby. Bottles don't spill as easily as glasses.

Sewing can be such an enjoyable, relaxing experience that you might be surprised how many hours will fly by. I try to set aside 1 or 2 days each weekend to sew. That's my little treat to myself after working all week. My washer and dryer are in the sewing room so I do laundry as I sew and I find it a very efficient use of my time. Sewing makes the tedious chore of laundry more enjoyable.

Happy Sewing!

3-Step Clean Sweep Program to Organize

1 - Purge
2 - Simplify
3 - Organize

Desk Shelf Unit

Getting Started

Desk Shelf Unit

Springtime is when many folks give their homes and offices a good cleaning. For every thing there is a season, and this is the season to get rid of the winter cobwebs. The hardest part of this project is deciding where to begin. The second hardest part is to get started. There is always more to do than time allows and thinking about it can be overwhelming. But, who says it all has to be done in the springtime? Choose what works best for you. Do one room a month or consider cleaning and organizing all the closets before you tackle drawers and shelves. You can establish the program and schedule the time. Remember, organizing is all about changing behaviors and making wise choices. Before you jump up and dig right in, take time to plan the attack. Organize your thoughts first and then the action stage will be easier. For every hour expended in the planning stage, three to four hours are saved in the execution phase. Spending a little time to save a lot of time is very good advice. So let's begin to plan. 1. Plan it on paper - Make a list of target areas. 2. Divide and Conquer - Break down large areas into small tasks and determine the action steps necessary to complete each portion. 3. Supplies - Having the right tool for the job makes the task so much easier. Be sure to have ample supplies on hand--garbage bags, storage and recycling boxes, cleaning supplies, rags, step stool... 4. Schedule - Make an appointment with yourself to complete each bite-size area. By now, you are in the habit of scheduling 15-minute blocks of time to accomplish specific tasks. Make and keep those daily appointments with yourself to tackle the clean sweep chores. The process of scheduling converts wishful desires into a commitment.

Step 1 - Purge Overabundance is a waster - a waster of time, money, space and energy. With too much stuff you waste time looking for what you want; you waste money for storage, maintaining, insuring...; you waste precious room for items seldom or never used; you waste energy just thinking about getting it all organized. When you take the time to reduce the number of things you have (purge), you will automatically increase the available space for the things you truly love and use. Why would you try to find room in the closet for ten pairs of sneakers when actually you only wear the two newest pairs? For what reason are you keeping the extras? Are you making wise choices with what you actually store? A positive benefit of purging is the release of claustrophobic symptoms. That's right! When useless clutter piles up, you panic and take flight. Instead of running, think attack mode. Take time to get rid of things that are broken, worn out, unused or unloved. No doubt, you will come across the obvious stuff to toss, but not everything needs to be relegated to the landfills. There are plenty of places to recycle useable items. http://www.organizingresources.com/pressreleases/recycle.htm Letting go means increased space and less time searching through clutter. You may also find your budget receives a big boost now that you do not have to maintain, insure and store unused items. Selling items or giving as a donation will reap the benefit of increased cash or a tax deduction. Purging benefits! Remember that more than three of anything constitutes a collection and there are always strings attached--storing, cleaning, repairing, insuring and on and on. You can control clutter only when you have less of it. Vow to save only what you can manage. Step 2 - Simplify Life has become incredibly complicated. We have more choices regarding work, family, friends, education, self-development, homes, furniture, food, places to eat, hobbies, travel and on and on. In today's fast-paced world, there is too much to do, too many demands, an overload of information and way too little time. There are opportunities every day to make more commitments and with each new commitment, we lose some space - environmental, physical, emotion and mental space. Simplicity does not mean living an austere and stark life. It means being aware of the illusions of necessities. Simplifying is a choice. You get to decide what simple living means to you. Basically, it means to add joy, fulfillment, passion and love to your existence while eliminating those things that drain you of time, money, space and energy. You can choose to appreciate people, places and things in your life. First purge, then simplify and the process of organizing will be much easier. There will be more breathing space. You can control clutter only when you have less of it. Unfortunately, many of us find it easier to be buried in clutter than figure out a way to take care of it. Panic sets in when you look at all you have accumulated and wonder where to begin to clear the spaces. Recognizing the fact that you are held in bondage to your possessions will precipitate action to simplify. Let go and feel the freedom! Step 3 - Organize When you start the organizing process think retrieval, not storage. The ultimate goal is to be able to find what you want when you want it. Purge the excess, broken and useless stuff and then simplify the remaining items by letting go of the unnecessary. Spend a little time deciding what is truly important in your life. Avoid playing mind games with the belief that it may be useful someday. Beware of the words like someday, maybe, should, somewhere, somehow... Such thoughts only add more pressure to keep items that really add nothing to your life's purpose. Ask yourself when was the last time you used it and under what circumstances would you need it again. Remember this is all about choices! Now you are ready to organize those things that you choose - things that are useful, beautiful and add joy to your life. Start with existing storage space first (closets, drawers, shelves). You will discover more room once you have purged the unwanted and simplified the clutter. Refrain from adding new storage areas. New or expanded storage units simply create more places to accumulate more clutter and ultimately disorganization. A well-organized closet (as well as drawers, bookcases, desk, kitchen, office, car, garage...) saves time, money and effort. Why are you keeping so much? Think about the 80/20 rule - Pareto's Principle. Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) stated that 80% of work is accomplished by 20% of the people. He was a revolutionary thinker. You can apply his principle to the clothes in your closets. Simply put, 80% of your clothes are rarely worn. In other words, 20% of the clothes in your closets are worn the majority of the time. So scrutinize the 80% for usefulness and begin the purging process. Deciding what to wear in the morning will be easier with an orderly closet of those frequently worn outfits. This same idea can be useful when you inspect your files, kitchen cabinets, garden tools, office supplies and every aspect of your life - 20% of your stuff is used frequently, 80% rarely or never. Be willing to discern the importance of 80% of the stuff you have accumulated over the years. Purge the broken, unwanted, unloved and unnecessary. Recognize the important 20% and vow to maintain only those things that you love, that you use and that bring joy to your life. Finally start the organizing project by gathering and storing objects in the places they are used. The result is that you can easily find what you want when you want it. Strive for 'one-motion' storage. When you open a cabinet, closet or drawer and reach in to retrieve something, you want to do it with one hand and without having to move things around. Avoid piling. A good rule is never stack more than three pieces. Henry David Thoreau defined clutter when he said he would rather toss an object that was in his way than continually move it around just to dust. He knew what he wanted to do with his time -- wander the woods, write books and philosphize about life. What do you want to do with your time?

Decorate a Country Style Home Office

A home office can be a corner of the kitchen used to pay bills and sort recipes or it can be a separate room dedicated to work. Whatever space you have for your home office, decorating it in a country style is sure to make time spent in this room much more pleasant.

Desk Shelf Unit

There are several versions of country style. You may be familiar with French country design with its mix of patterns, primary colors, woven chair seats and over-stuffed furniture. Italian country offers a more rustic style featuring plaster walls, distressed furniture and rooster art.

Desk Shelf Unit

American country style often conjures up visions of rustic furniture, plaid fabrics and hand crafted items. While this is certainly true, American country style decorating can also be very sophisticated.

All these styles have one thing in common and that is to create a comfortable and inviting space to relax and enjoy life. As an added bonus, being surrounded by things you love can also make your work hours much more productive.

Decorating for Functionality

First and foremost, a home office must be functional. You will need a place to work, store files and supplies and possibly meet with clients.

A desk or work surface can be constructed from many different items. For a simple and rustic look, use an old door as your desktop. It can be supported with old oak file cabinets, stacks of vintage luggage, small step ladders, a stack of books or even an old sawhorse. Regardless of what type of support you use be sure the door is properly secured. A piece of glass or a desk blotter can be added to the top to create a smooth work surface.

A weathered old farm table or library table makes a wonderful desk in a country style office, offering plenty of desktop space. The most affordable option is to simply use a piece of plywood supported by two file cabinets. The plywood can be stained or painted and distressed to create a vintage look. For a more feminine look, hang curtains around the edges to hide the file cabinets.

Search your local antique stores and the internet for an old desk. The aged patina and scratches from years of use may just inspire you to work harder.

A desk chair is an obvious must. To soften the look of a standard office chair, make slipcovers or a pretty chair pad to coordinate with the room.

Functional Accessories

As with other rooms in your home, a home office needs to be accessorized in order to make it feel homey and comfortable. If you are decorating in a country style you have the opportunity to repurpose items as inventive storage pieces.

Use an old toolbox for desktop supplies such as paper clips, tacks, envelopes, staplers etc. The handle makes it easy to transport this piece to other areas of the office as needed. An old silverware divider meant for drawers makes a great catch-all in your office. The long and narrow spaces can hold pens and pencils, rulers, and scissors. These are often pretty enough to sit on top of your desk or file cabinet.

Hang baskets or old metal buckets on the wall to collect magazines, outgoing mail, blueprints, etc. They can be labeled very easily and make for interesting wall décor. Vintage doorknobs can be used as pegs to hold the baskets.

Search for old wooden file cabinets. These can be used to support a desktop, as an end table next to a chair or sofa or simply placed against the wall as storage units.

If you have bookcases or built-ins, consider adding old shutters or screen doors as a unique way to hide the items on the shelves.

Home Office Country Lighting

Lighting is important in any room in your home, especially in the office. A combination of task lighting and ambient lighting will make it more comfortable to work.

A swing arm wall sconce makes it possible for you to direct the light where you need it. This can be placed next to your desk or reading chair.

An old pharmacy lamp next to your sofa or chair adds to the vintage feel of the room and is small enough to be used in any size space.

Country Wall Decor

These accessories may include coordinating wall decor such as photographs and prints, shelf items such as souvenirs collected from travels, family photos or interesting and unique items such as wall maps of the world or places you have visited.

Consider wrapping everyday binders in burlap or muslin for a homespun look, or use fabric that coordinates with the rest of the room.

Your New Comfortably Decorated Home Office

Beware! Decorating your home office in a country style may create a space so comfortable and inviting that you find yourself working overtime hours or spending non-work related time in this room just reading and relaxing. Don't forget to use the rest of the rooms in your house - or better yet, redecorate them to match your new country office.
