When having an office at home meant a deck in the corner of the living room, there wasn't much that could streamline the process. But a few years later with a sunny new addition with garden view windows, a roomy storage closet for files and supplies, and plenty of space for shelving, desks, and a boardroom table and chairs for meetings, the options are endless. But, until the exterior walls are complete and the builders move out so I can move in, I'm stuck with my corner of the living room.
Cutting the clutter is the first option.
Desk Shelf Unit
By bringing in a new streamlined sofa almost a year ago, adding a couple of nice chairs, and tables to keep the living room grouping minimized, while providing a cozy atmosphere, we managed to add space for an office armoire. The storage of supplies and necessities behind closed doors left the rest of the room open for living. My desk featured open shelving and a nice corner arrangement that allowed for visiting guests or clients to use the extended arm, while I snuggled into my corner with all essential elements close at hand.
This year, I added in some shelves along the wall that house folders, binders, and portfolio units necessary to my work. The wall above displays family photos, certificates, paintings, and special framed copies of my award winning work. Just so the kids don't complain about living among mom's awards, I added in a segment of wall to display their awards, publications, and accomplishments.
Light bright colors & easy to clean surfaces in the living room make the whole work together. Opting for soft gray backgrounds with buttery yellow walls gives the room a wide open feel, and allows light to reflect around the room.
Organizing collections, essential elements, and necessities makes the room work bigger and allows for best use of space. Effective window treatments that keep the space open and uncluttered, yet allows for plenty of light helps to open up the space.
